I think we are officially a farm now! We have chickens!! Yes! I caved in and we picked up 10 chickens yesterday. There are 8 hens and two roosters. They are actually very interesting creatures and nice. The chickens have gone to work eating all the bad insects (mosquito's, ticks, fleas, just to name a few) and weeds. Buddy will not stop barking at them and he actually got into the pin yesterday and ended up with a mouth full of feathers. It was really funny!
The girls love them (we told them to NOT get to attached b/c we will be eating them) Mike will handle that! We all had farm fresh eggs for breakfast this morning. They tasted about the same to me as store bought (shh don't tell) but I am most certain they were better for us and the taste was a little more fluffy! The man we bought them from (interesting family) had eggs coming out of his ears and offered us a bunch of eggs. He only started farming chickens two years ago and has lots of chickens now and lots of eggs. He said more than they can eat so they give them away. Anyone need EGGS!
The chickens are much happier here b/c they have a large hen house (soon to be roosting boxes) and very large double pin to walk around and eat in. I hope to let them out in the yard as soon as Buddy gets a little more used to them. I have lots of weeds and insects for them to eat. I am a little afraid about getting them back into the pin (I really don't want to touch them) but the lady said you can just pick them right up at dusk. They will just sit there at night.
I was worried about them last night b/c of the horror stories the lady told me about hawks swooping down and taking there heads off and I know we have lots of coyotes around here b/c Mike shot one last week. The coyotes were all over our property the last month and he said he was sick of them (they are very loud) and peppered one in the rear with a shot gun. We haven't heard them since. Oh! the many stories of farm life (the experienced farmers are rolling there eyes) I could go on for hours. Let's just say the girls are very happy and not in my hair very often. (pics coming soon)
